Information about Frixion pens

I received some interesting information from Margaret Gingrich about using frixion pens on fabric:
This was posted on another list but am going to share it because we have discussed the use of Frixion pens here on the hand quilting group. Bottom line: use at your own risk!
from Karen Alexander
OK, to all my friends using the Pilot FRIXION pens for marking their quilts/sewing. In response to an email to the makers requesting information on the pens suitability for use on fabrics, I received a very friendly response. It was indicated that to remove the chemical ink, one should use one of three recommended chemicals! None of which I had ever heard of or have at my home! And the company representative went on to say that "for that reason, we do not recommend the use of the Frixion pen on fabric.".... So, use it, but know that the chemical stays in your fabric (it doesn't come out with detergent), and while today, it is invisible unless exposed to very cold temperatures (think freezer), it doesn't go away, and so, may someday come back to haunt you and your quilt or fabric! It's a friction eraseable pen designed for use on paper, in an office setting - not for fabric use as a temporary marking agent. I'll stick with chalk!
A big thank you to Karen Alexander for taking te time to contact Frixion. If the company says 'don't use on fabric-' take heed.

Thank you Margaret for passing that information on to the guild. That might save someone from a sad mess on one of their quilts.

Guild Auction!!!

One more reminder....
Now is the time to go through your fabric stash, tool stash, quilt book stash, etc., and decide what you can do without but someone else might need.
On Tuesday the 3rd, at 10:00 at the library, we will have an auction that will be lots of fun. We will be using fake money (of course) to bid for lots of gently used quality items.
There will also be a mystery quilter and you won't want to miss that.
See you Tuesday.

Special tribute to our fellow quilter, Helen Larsen

We would all like to thank Helen Larsen for her inspiration and her happy example. She has been a member of the quild for years and always participates and shares her expertise with everyone. She is a wealth of knowledge, information and experiences and loves to share them. She is 96 years young and we hope she has many more.
THANK YOU HELEN
Helen, in the center, really enjoyed our Christmas party.

February guild meeting

Our February guild meeting will be an exciting one as we have our "After Christmas clean-out auction". This is a great time to go through your sewing room, neaten up and prepare to re-home your gently used sewing tools, fabric, patterns, quilt books, anything at all that you think the quilters in the guild would be able to use. This is a really fun event with a near-professional auctioneer that will really move these items to the highest bidder (play money). Start to prepare now for the meeting which is on the 3rd of February at 10:00 at the library meeting room.

Service opportunity at the Skilled Nursing Center

Our guild has the opportunity to provide service to the Skilled Nursing Center in Kanab. They are in need of twin sized quilts and we will present the quilts to them as we receive them through the year. The quilts need to be sturdy and able to withstand many washings. A fine chance for us to show our quilting skills and serve the deserving people at the center.

Disappearing Pinwheel tutorials

Everyone loved the fun blocks and quilt ideas at our last guild meeting. It was fun to see that one block could make four different quilts with just a little shifting of the pieces. Following are tutorials for the different blocks in case it would be helpful to see the process.

Service opportunity

Jeanette would like us all to know that the care center needs twin size quilts. They have 15 beds and every bed needs a new quilt. These quilts can be tied or machine quilted and need to be sturdy enough to withstand many washings. This is a great opportunity for us to share our talents with the folks at the care center.
Thanks Jeanette for this information.

First quilt guild meeting of 2015!!!

Co-presidents, Nayna and Ilene, started the new year with a fun guild meeting with lots of information, a fun game with m&m's, tips and tools, mystery quilter, birthday presents for everyone and topped it off with donuts. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed visiting with each other.

Ilene showed her quilt which is the Shoo-fly pattern. She introduced the four variations of the Disappearing Pinwheel with the shoo-fly being #1.
Ilene and Nayna then showed us the remaining three variations. The Churn Dash is #2

The Illinois Road is variation #4

The Whirlygig is variation #3
They demonstrated how you take one basic pinwheel block and cut it into thirds. You can then make four different blocks depending on how you arrange your pieces.

So much fun to see what you can do with a little shuffling of pieces.

Ilene started show and tell with a very pretty quilt that she finished to give a friend for her retirement.
Micky told about a paper piecing class that she took. She loved the class and made several very pretty blocks.
Mac picked out this fabric so it was extra meaningful for Micky.
Pam made this quilt for her daughter and used the technique that Kris taught last year. She said it took awhile to make so many blocks but that it was lots of fun.
She even put a label on the back!!
Alana showed several beautiful quilts today...
This is an English Hexagon quilt.
This one is called Hanky Panky.
Jeanette showed this quilt as you go quilt. She said that she wouldn't want to do a big quilt this way but that she really liked this one.
She also finished this quilt that she bought as a kit from Superior Threads.
The back of the quilt using batik from The Mayor's House. Marla quilted this one and did a beautiful job.
Jeanette has been very busy and finished this quilt too.
Joan showed this quilt that was left to her by a dear friend that passed away last summer. She thinks that it was made close to a 100 years ago and is very precious to her.
She showed the back of the quilt which shows off the beautiful hand quilting.

Alana was the mystery quilter this month and we learned some fun things about her. Demolition Derby Alana????
We were treated to a trunk show of her gorgeous quilts

This was a kit from JoAnn's.

Alana traced coloring book pages for some of the blocks for this quilt and then embroidered them.

This is a Buggy Barn quilt

Alana's Mother made the blocks for this quilt and Alana finished the quilt.

This is Alana's very favorite quilt that she has made. It is a log cabin with applique and is hand quilted.

This will be a table runner but it shows some blocks like the double wedding ring quilts that Alana made.

Ilene then showed some tools and tricks to make our quilting easier. This is a pad to put under your machine foot pedal to keep it from slipping around.
This is a revolving cutting mat to make cutting those pinwheel blocks simple.

This is a board with slots to hold all of those rulers. You can either hang it up or put it on the counter.

It surprised us all to see that Marla has some new cutting tools and rulers. She demonstrated how new and improved items just keep coming out. All to make our quilting a breeze.

Thanks Marla

Everyone had a great time and look forward to trying the disappearing Pinwheel blocks and all the new tools. We also look forward to our meeting in February which will be an auction.
